So I've just become one of the .0?% of the population who is actually touched by this horrible war. My Cousin's son (that's my first cousin once removed for those keeping score), has enlisted, as a medic. He's actually being sent to Kandahar, not Iraq, but if Bush had kept our troops in Afghanistan instead of starting this tragically stupid war in Iraq, Kandahar might be a picture of peace right now, so I'm even more furious at Bush now that a loved one is at risk. Mostly though, I'm worried about my cousin, and I can only pray he comes home safely. Below is a poem that his 16 year old sister wrote about his departure - wish I could say it this well.
Departed Soldier
>
>
>Left, right, left
>Head to heart
>Step, step, step,
>The commander yells "March!"
>
>There's a blue star banner in my window
>And I watch the flag outside as the wind blows
>The tears of my mother, I want to cry
>The struggling expression of my father, i'll keep it
>inside
>
>He left a beret on my pillow
>10th Mountain Division
>I find myself talking to my shadow
>Pretending that it's him
>
>Sometimes I hear his voice
>When I sing his favorite songs
>I know enlisting was his choice,
>I know that he is gone
>
>I think about him every day,
>Sending letters on their way
>I know he's tough, I know he's strong
>My American soldier will carry on
>
>Destined by desire, he wants to help others
>This man, this boy, he is my brother
>A Combat Medic headed for war
>I love him; I'll love him, forever more.
>
>Left, right, left
>Head to heart
>Step, step, step,
>The commander yells "March!"
